What is voltage regulator IC ?
The 78xx (sometimes L78xx, LM78xx, MC78xx...) is a family of self-contained fixed linear voltage regulator integrated circuits. The 78xx family is commonly used in electronic circuits requiring a regulated power supply due to their ease-of-use and low cost. For ICs within the family, the xx is replaced with two digits, indicating the output voltage (for example, the 7805 has a 5 volt output, while the 7812 produces 12 volts). The 78xx line are positive voltage regulators: they produce a voltage that is positive relative to a common ground. There is a related line of 79xx devices which are complementary negative voltage regulators. 78xx and 79xx ICs can be used in combination to provide positive and negative supply voltages in the same circuit.

Use of Voltage Regulator ICs in Robotics - In a robot a wide range of components are used like sensors, motors, driver circuit, various ICs, micro controller unit, RF remote control unit. All these components need various levels of voltages and currents to operate. To use different batteries for all these levels of voltage is not possible. Mostly we use one battery of a certain voltage level. Then we use these voltage regulator ICs to operate these components.

that restricts the voltage output to 5V and draws 7-12V supply.

These applications include on-card regulation for elimination of noise and distribution problems associated with single-point regulation. Each of these regulators can deliver up to 1.5 A of output current. The internal current-limiting and thermal-shutdown features of these regulators essentially make them immune to overload. In addition to use as fixed-voltage regulators, these devices can be used with external components to obtain adjustable output voltages and currents, and also can be used as the power-pass element in precision regulators.

IC 7809 is a 9V Voltage Regulator that restricts the voltage output to 9V and draws 12 V regulated power supply.
